Styling the Apple Body Shape

The apple body shape is known for having a less defined waistline paired with gorgeous thin legs and broad shoulders.  While this can be challenging sometimes, the right pieces will have your body looking balanced and slim.

Generally speaking, pieces that draw attention away from the midsection toward the legs or toward the neckline will be most flattering.

Lightweight dresses can be difficult due to the fabric’s natural tendency to cling to the body; this draws attention to the midsection.  Wrap dresses, dresses that have a front knot (see below) and dresses that have ruching similar to the front knot detail will be most flattering.  Cinching the fabric in the middle of the dress, via front knot or ruching, creates fullness above and below that area and thus creating a waistline.

Seen here in this photo from Hub Pages, Elizabeth Hurley wears a lightweight Jersey dress that has a knot detail in the front.  The front knot creates the illusion of the hourglass.

Dresses–  Dresses should be chosen carefully.  Interesting necklines that draw the eye up are beautiful on the apple body.  One can also draw the eye down with a statement heel and a dress that ends at or above the knee.

This dress from a fellow blogger demonstrates two tricks: using a belt to create a waistline and color-blocking to create curves.

Belting a dress or top can be an easy solution for too much emphasis on the mid-section.  The belt breaks up the fabric into smaller pieces which results in the illusion of a waistline.

Tops– V-neck tops are most flattering for the Apple shape.  Turtlenecks, boatneck, and other wide cuts should be avoided because of the tendency to make the shoulders appear more broad.

I also really enjoy using relaxed fitting jackets on Apple shapes.  The natural shape of the neckline is very flattering and creates the illusion of  a smaller waist.  Too structured or added shoulder padding can call attention to the broad shoulders.
