Wei Ting Liang created “The Inner Self Collection” for her 3rd year final project. The project embodies death and the beauty of returning to one’s true self. White represents the return of the body to nothingness or “zero.” Her designs reveal the shedding of the outer shell to reveal the soft structure within. This week, I’m particularly in need of some extra motivation to get me through the work week.
10 days and counting until my toes are in the sand.
Today I used all of the products I told you about in my last beauty post to show you how to get polished make-up in under 5 minutes.
Novelty pieces are a unique way to break up the monotony within your closet. Rompers are a fabulous current trend that comes back around few years. It’s a great idea to invest in one that you can carry with you throughout the years.
The Studio Joy Li Romper is playful, yet sophisticated. The drape is gorgeously flattering for all figures. While there is no defined waistline, the linear style-lines show off the figure without the awkward tightness and bunching caused by ill-fitting rompers. The sheer tank adds to the overall shape by carrying the eye down the piece toward the side drape, by both the grid pattern as well as the hi-low shape.
The most difficult area to fit on a romper is the crotch. Nothing is worse than feeling like you have to keep tugging at a romper at the expense of either undesired cleavage or camel-toe. While I usually find drop-crotch pants to be unappealing, the fit of this romper is very different. Most drop-crotch pants have an inverted U-shaped crotch area, causing the fabric to bunch and crease in that region, which makes me think I look like I’m wearing a poopy diaper. Nobody wants that! The Studio Joy Li romper is inverted V-shaped, so the fabric drapes and curves around the body delicately. The straps are adjustable as well, for a more comfortable fit.

It’s so hot here in Phoenix! Beat the heat with crop tops and high waisted skirts or shorts.
The Laurena top from Kora Rae is a must have for those of us surviving the heat. Breathable mesh trimmed with fine leather not only looks luxurious, but it keeps cool.
Paired with a high waisted skirt, crop tops can bare just enough skin to be sexy for date night without going overboard.
Pair it with some hip, comfy espadrilles for a relaxed casual look, or go with pumps to dress it up.
Adding an accessory like a hat, scarf or interesting bag is a way to elevate any look.
Clothes should evoke feeling when worn. Pieces that look fierce, playful, seductive, happy, bold, strong, and the list could go on… instantly make us feel those things when we don them. In that sense, clothes are wearable art.
With her creations, Elvira ‘t Hart, of the Netherlands, has mastered wearable art. Her clothes are inspired by her drawings and it shows through in a pleasingly literal way.

Our trip to India was spectacular. My husband is first generation American with majority of his (now our) extended family still residing in India. Over two years ago, we made the journey across the world to visit his family’s homeland.
One of my favorite places on Earth is his Grandfather’s farm. Nestled in a small village in Northern India is this gem. I feel blessed to have had this experience because it was a once in a lifetime glimpse into the past. Much of the village is without electricity or has bare bones of an electrical set-up; maybe a few lights here and there in the house, but not much else. Comically though, looking out at the villiage from the roof-top, there are many satellite dishes. They may not have much else, but there are some homes with satellite tv. It’s not the same, seemingly unlimited, channels of satellite tv we have here in the US.
Sugar Cane is one of the major crops. While socializing in the street, we were passed by locals with their daily harvest. One of my husband’s uncles stopped a rickshaw driver and asked him if we could some. The man was happy to oblige the foreign visitors.
Children in India chew sugar cane as a treat, the way Americans chew gum. Peeling pieces of sugar cane away with their teeth actually helps to straighten them.
Inside Grandfather’s home, the details are exquisite. Built in the 1950’s, it was once a grand home. Looking at it now, it is grand and rich with history. Many homes in the village are still without roofs over the courtyards and most of the living space. The family that rents this home currently keeps a buffalo inside the courtyard. They live peacefully with their buffalo.
We visited the ruins of Qtub Minar in Delhi India. Historically, Minars are a tower or calling point from Muslim prayer. The minar measures 73 meters (240 feet) high with a diameter of 14.3 meters (46 feet) at the base. Construction began in 1199 AD. In 1369 AD the tower was struck by lightning and the top story was destroyed. Restoration after the lightning included adding the final two stories. Qtub Minar is made of red sandstone and marble.
The view above shows balconies from where people used to be able to look out. Since 1981, the tower has been closed to the public.
Lotus Temple was my favorite temple. We shared a moment of silent prayer with a temple packed with people. It was a magical moment. The lotus itself is a significant symbol in India. The lotus blossom is the beauty that grows in muddy, murky water. It symbolizes that no matter what mud surrounds you in your life, you can choose to be beautiful. I have lived that mantra since I learned it ten years ago.
Holi is the festival of color and is the celebration of good over evil. We were in India during this celebration. Extravagant displays of flower petals decorate homes and public places. We came across the one below in our hotel lobby.
People fill the streets of India and throw color on each other in celebration.
It wouldn’t be a complete trip to India without seeing the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is one of the greatest love stories of all time. Shah Jahan built it as a shrine to his beloved wife, so her eternal resting place would be as magnificent as was she.
The intricate marble work is exquisite. Each colored piece has to be specially shaped by hand and it’s corresponding marble piece has to be carved out perfectly, so the pieces will fit together. The artisans who still perform this work have been trained for generations and the trade has been preserved and kept secret.
The Taj Mahal is not lit by any artificial light. The marble is illuminated by the moonlight during a full moon. For that reason, night viewings are limited to full moons only. We visited the Taj during a full moon, however, the clouds shaded the moon and we did not get the full affect. On our tour, the guide placed a flashlight under a piece of marble similar to that above and the red marble glowed like it was on fire. We will definitely have to take another trip to see the Taj under the moonlight, especially because we got engaged at the Taj Mahal during the night viewing, but that’s a story for another time.
I consider this look fresh and easy because I can achieve it in under 10 minutes with these products.
Because I love my readers and I believe all women to be beautiful sans make-up, I share with you the transformation:
I have freckles, pale skin, blond lashes and light eyebrows. I could use some help preventing sun damage, evening skin-tone and adding some drama to my lashes/brows. I don’t skimp on foundation products because my skin is easily irritated and I feel it’s the first thing people notice, so I want to have well cared for polished skin at all times. I don’t however pay top dollar for other products, so I’ll present alternatives where I see fit.
Diorsnow UV Protection BB Crème
I love, love, love this product because it has SPF 50, goes on evenly without being greasy, and really goes a long way toward color correction. I’ve tried many other BB creme products and I found that many of them went on greasy or so thin that there really wasn’t any color correcting benefit. BB creme takes the place of your morning moisturizer, sun screen and foundation, so I want to get all three out of it without compromise. I also noticed that most other BB cremes were between SPF10 and SPF 20.
After the application, my skin is slightly tacky feeling, which is perfect for powder application. If I were going to run errands and hit the gym, I would stop here or just after applying powder to set it (using #3 and omitting step #2). This product lasts through trips to the gym and pool. I can lye out in the Arizona sun and sweat my face off, without losing my morning make-up. Also noteworthy, I use this product daily and I generally get about 6 months out of one tube.
Diorskin Nude Air Tan Powder
Using basic contouring principles, I apply, with a contour brush, under the cheekbones, around chin, along nose and around the top and sides of the forehead. A little goes a long way, but don’t be afraid to leave noticeable lines. They will blend in with the step #3 and if they are a bit thick after step #4, you can always remove some with a dry tissue. In a pinch, I have used this product for eyeshadow as well. I travel a lot and if I forget my make-up bag, I’ll run out and get a few products that I can spread a long way.
Diorskin Nude Air Powder
I apply a small amount with a powder brush while rubbing in circular motions to blend the contouring from step #2.
Dior Glow Maximizer
Using highlighting principles, I apply a small amount with my finger to the bridge of the nose, T-zone, under the shaded areas under the cheekbones and just under the eyes. For highlighting, I also really like Cynthia Rowley Beauty Brightening Illuminator $28 and Buxom Divine Goddess Luminizer $28.
Small amount applied with a blush brush to the apple of the cheeks. There is no need to add more blush because contouring and highlighting have already defined the cheeks. I have also used blushes from Dior and Covergirl as well. Blush is better in small amounts, so I say match your shade and don’t accept the upcharge for expensive brands on this particular product.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pommade
Another product that absolutely changed my life! I was wandering Nordstrom one day hoping nobody would notice that I over-plucked my brows again, when a chipper young lady approached me and asked if I would like to have a brow consult. I said, “Of course! I need help!” She took me back to the Anastasia Brow Studio on the main floor of Nordstrom Fashion Square and the tutorial began. She showed me the array of stencils and how to determine which one was right for me. After placing the stencil according to instructions, I can make a perfect brow with this pommade (or the powder $23 if I’m not going for waterproof). I’ve been at it for so long, that I no longer need the stencil, but I’ll be sure to make a blog post on how to use them. Stay tuned!
A well-defined brow changes the entire look.
Roller Lash Mascara by Benefit Cosmetics
Roller Lash came into my life via Burchbox and I really liked it. It lifts and separates lashes nicely. I also like Covergirl Lash Blast Mascara $7 for a cheaper option. I have a friend who has perfect lashes at all times and she uses Covergirl Lash Blast. I highly recommend both of them.
Mascara finalizes the look. It really does take me under 10 minutes (5 if I’m pushing it) to get this done from start to finish. Check back next week for a video tutorial on this look.
Hi, I'm Kate. I'm a nurse by trade. Yes, that's right, I'm a hold your hand, clean your wound, do CPR, lift patients, hard working, selfless kind of nurse. I've gained a lot of life experiences doing nursing in some pretty rough areas of town. I love taking care of people and I actually enjoyed chemistry class. I also, however, enjoy making my own clothes and have been doing so for 10+ years. Read More
